- I own a CompuAd XT-clone (yes, it still works for my relatively modest
- demands!), and was given a Cardinal 9600V42 modem. Unfortunately, the
- software (sans manual) that came with it does not work with my freenet,
- although I think modem itself is working because some settings will put
- garbage on the screen, but no connection. I suspect that either I have
- the wrong modem string or the software has a fixed emulation different
- from the VT100 my freenet demands. Furthermore, I have been totally
- unsuccessful in finding a store in the north Detroit area that carries
- modem software for DOS, and even if I did, the cost is as much as
- purchasing a new modem (which would have supplied software and run much
- faster, assuming I had a computer that could work with the faster speeds).
-
- Plan B is to ask if anybody can recommend reasonably-priced freeware or
- shareware for DOS modem use. I would need something that set the modem
- by software commands, as well as transfer speeds, and has some reasonably
- current version of KERMIT or X,Y or Z-MODEM for downloading (which I
- cannot do at present). I know this sounds pathetic to you fast-modem
- fans, but one has to do with what one has, and right now I can't do a
- thing! Help!
